State College Friends Meeting
Quakerism 102
"A Quaker testimony is a belief that stems from our fundamental understanding of religious truth. It is a corporately held belief about how we should individually act. In practicing them, we witness to our understanding of the very nature of God's spirit of love and truth."
(Jonathan Dale, 1996)
First Class: Monday, September 29 - 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the State College Friends Meetinghouse.
Quakerism 102 will supplement and deepen basic concepts covered Quakerism 101, as taught during the Fall, 2007. This course will assume general knowledge of the "basics" of Quakerism and will take a "deep dive" into several key topics, such as the Inward Light, the peace testimony, Meeting for Worship, Quaker business process and covenant community. The course will be primarily dialogue-based, engaging students in large- and small-group discussion and depend greatly students' willingness and ability to read a limited amount of assigned material (approximately a chapter or pamphlet for each session) prior to each class period.
I would ask that students make every effort to attend all five sessions, and to read the following document (3 pages only) prior to the first session next week (Monday, Sept 29).
